What is Pediatric Hematology/Oncology?
Pediatric oncology is the medical subspecialty focused on the research, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood cancers. Pediatric hematology is the related subspecialty focused on treating childhood diseases of the blood or blood forming organs.
How We Improve Care as Part of the Children's Oncology Group
Unlike other areas of medicine, most children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer are treated on nationally-sponsored studies. We are committed to providing improved care for these children through the Children's Oncology Group (COG), a consortium of about 250 medical centers throughout the world. Uniform treatment plans agreed upon by these investigators allow efficient data collection, treatment implementation and dissemination of results for all types of childhood malignancies. By treating children in clinical trials, COG members have increased the cancer cure rate for children from less than 10 percent 40 years ago to over 80 percent today.
